Backend Development with Node.js

Build real APIs, authentication, and database logic that power products.

3 weeks Intermediate

This track focuses on the backend systems that actually keep a product running: REST APIs, authentication, and database design, built with the same Node.js and Express stack our engineering team uses for client backends. You will leave with a working understanding of how a real backend is structured, not just how to write isolated endpoints.

What you will learn

  • Node.js and Express fundamentals for real API design
  • RESTful API structure and best practices
  • Authentication and authorization with JWT
  • Database modeling with MongoDB and Mongoose
  • Error handling and input validation done properly
  • Basic API security: rate limiting, sanitization, and common vulnerabilities
  • Testing endpoints with Postman and writing basic automated tests
Tools you will work with
Node.jsExpressMongoDBPostmanJWT

Who this is for

  • Students comfortable with basic JavaScript who want to move beyond the frontend
  • Computer science students who have covered theory but not built a real API
  • Anyone targeting a full stack developer role long-term

Questions about this course

Is this suitable if I have only ever worked on frontend projects?

Yes, this is a common and reasonable path. You should be comfortable with JavaScript fundamentals before starting.

Will I learn SQL as well as MongoDB?

This track focuses specifically on MongoDB, since that is our primary backend database. SQL fundamentals can be covered separately if relevant to a specific project.
